THE GREATEST OF THEM IS LOVE
Talk as a child ... v. 11b Do you remember what he was talking about when he was a child? And while it is true that some children speak more than others, I assure you that their conversations had nothing to do with studies, business, jobs or marriages. In this metaphor that Paul is using, he is still talking about the immature stage through which love passes, not by love itself, but by those who profess that love. The way we often act in our relationships between brothers in the faith, family level, couples, etc., is a faithful reflection that love needs to go from one stage to another. What does Paul show us with this talking like a child?
Context has to do with speaking in tongues. In the V. 8 has told us that both prophecies and
tongues will end. They are gifts that would cease, that's why he has been telling us that he "shows us a more excellent way." Talking as a child and talking as an adult are two totally different visions. The love that never ceases to be and that becomes the greatest of all, must necessarily begin to speak as a man.
Judge as a child v. 11c. Again, and following the idea of a child, the judgment of that age on things is scarce. No one asks a child to help solve a problem where a serious and important decision must be made. And it is here that we must continue to understand Paul in his raised reasoning about love and the need for the believer to overcome that stage that could include any of the gifts related to the matter of judging. The idea of the text is that of "reasoned" \ referring to wisdom. It may well be a reference to what Paul said when he spoke that science would end. A summary of all this will tell us that some gifts are temporary, while love is permanent.
That some gifts are partial while the perfect love. But, above all, that some gifts have been for the childhood of the church, when she began, but that love is for maturity. There is a call throughout this text to go to maturity. True love cannot remain the same forever. It hurts a lot of any relationship, for example, that of the couple, when one of the spouses does not finish maturing. The goal should be to become "man."
