How can I overcome sin in my Christian life?

The Bible presents different resources to help us overcome our sinfulness. In this life, we will never be perfectly victorious over sin (1 John 1: 8), but that must be our goal. With God's help, and following the principles of His word, we can progressively overcome sin and become more and more like Christ.


The first resource the Bible mentions to help us overcome sin is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a gift that God has given us to be victorious in Christian living. In Galatians 5: 16-25, God makes a contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. In that passage, we are called to walk in the Spirit. All believers already possess the Holy Spirit, but this passage tells us that we need to walk in the Spirit, leaving under our control our will. This means that we should put into practice what the Holy Spirit leads us to do in our lives, instead of following the desires of the flesh.

The difference that the Holy Spirit can make in the life of the believer is demonstrated in the life of Peter, who before being filled with the Holy Spirit, denied Jesus three times, having said before that he would follow Christ to death. Once filled with the Spirit, Peter spoke of the Savior to the Jews at Pentecost in a strong and open way.

One walks in the Spirit trying not to quench the Spirit (as he says in 1 Thessalonians 5:19) and rather seek to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5: 18-21). How is one filled with the Holy Spirit? First, it is God's choice as it was in the Old Testament. God chose specific individuals to carry out a work He wanted them to do and filled them with His Spirit (Genesis 41:38; Exodus 31: 3; Numbers 24: 2; 1 Samuel 10:10). In Ephesians 5: 18-21 and Colossians 3:16, there is evidence that God chooses to fill those who are being filled with the Word of God. So that brings us to our next resource.

(2) The Word of God, the Bible, in 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 says that God has given us His Word to equip us for every good work. This teaches us how to live and what to believe, reveals us when we have chosen wrong paths, helps us to return to the right path, and helps us stay on that path. As Hebrews 4:12 tells us, the Word is alive and effective, and capable of penetrating our hearts, to tear out the deepest problems that humanly speaking cannot be overcome. The psalmist talks about this power that can change lives in Psalm 119. Joshua was told that the key to success in defeating his enemies was not to forget this resource, but rather to meditate on the Word day and night, so that I could obey her. He did it, even though what God commanded him made no military sense, and this was the key to his victory in his struggle to obtain the promised land.

The Bible is a resource that we often treat lightly. We give proof of this by taking our Bibles to church, or reading the daily devotional or a daily chapter, but we fail to memorize it, to meditate on it or to apply it to our lives; we fail to confess the sins he reveals to us or worship God for the gifts he reveals to have given us. We often become anorexic or bulimic when it comes to the Bible. By feeding on the Word, we aspire enough to keep ourselves alive spiritually (but we never ingest enough to be healthy and prosperous Christians); or we often feed ourselves, but we never meditate long enough to obtain spiritual nutrition from it.

If you have not made a habit of studying and meditating on the Word of God, it is important that you already begin to do so. I also suggest you start a diary. Have a habit not to leave the Word of God until you have written something that benefits you. Some write prayers that they make to God, asking him to help them change in the areas in which He has spoken to them. The Bible is the tool that the Spirit uses in our lives (Ephesians 6:17), an indispensable and primordial part of the armor God gives us, to fight our spiritual battles (Ephesians 6: 12-18).

¿Cómo puedo vencer el pecado en mi vida cristiana?

La Biblia presenta diferentes recursos para ayudarnos a vencer nuestra pecaminosidad. En esta vida, nunca seremos perfectamente victoriosos sobre el pecado (1 Juan 1:8), pero esa debe ser nuestra meta. Con la ayuda de Dios, y siguiendo los principios de Su palabra, podemos progresivamente vencer el pecado y llegar a ser más y más como Cristo.

El primer recurso que la Biblia menciona para ayudarnos a vencer el pecado es el Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu Santo es un don que Dios nos ha dado para ser victoriosos en el vivir cristiano. En Gálatas 5:16-25, Dios hace un contraste entre las obras de la carne y el fruto del Espíritu. En ese pasaje, somos llamados a caminar en el Espíritu. Todos los creyentes ya poseen el Espíritu Santo, pero este pasaje nos dice que necesitamos caminar en el Espíritu, dejando bajo Su control nuestra voluntad. Esto significa que deberíamos llevar a la práctica lo que el Espíritu Santo nos induce a hacer en nuestras vidas, en lugar de seguir los deseos de la carne.

La diferencia que el Espíritu Santo puede hacer en la vida del creyente se demuestra en la vida de Pedro, quien antes de ser lleno del Espíritu Santo, negó a Jesús tres veces, habiendo dicho antes que seguiría a Cristo hasta la muerte. Una vez lleno del Espíritu, Pedro habló del Salvador a los judíos en pentecostés de manera fuerte y abierta.

Uno camina en el Espíritu tratando de no apagar al Espíritu (como dice en 1ª Tesalonicenses 5:19) y buscar más bien, ser lleno del Espíritu (Efesios 5:18-21). ¿Cómo se llena uno del Espíritu Santo? Primero, es elección de Dios igual que lo era en el Antiguo Testamento. Dios elegía a individuos específicos para llevar a cabo una obra que Él quería que hicieran y los llenaba con Su Espíritu (Génesis 41:38; Éxodo 31:3; Números 24:2; 1ª Samuel 10:10). En Efesios 5:18-21 y Colosenses 3:16, hay evidencia de que Dios escoge llenar a aquellos que se están llenando de la Palabra de Dios. De manera que eso nos lleva a nuestro siguiente recurso.

(2) La Palabra de Dios, la Biblia, en 2ª Timoteo 3:16-17 dice que Dios nos ha dado Su Palabra para equiparnos para cada buena obra. Esto nos enseña cómo vivir y qué creer, nos revela cuando hemos escogido senderos erróneos, nos ayuda a regresar al sendero correcto, y nos ayuda a permanecer en ese sendero. Como nos dice Hebreos 4:12, la Palabra es viva y eficaz, y capaz de penetrar en nuestros corazones, para arrancar los problemas más profundos que humanamente hablando no se pueden vencer. El salmista habla acerca de este poder que puede cambiar vidas en el Salmo 119. A Josué se le dijo que la clave del éxito para vencer a sus enemigos, era no era olvidar este recurso, sino más bien meditar en la Palabra día y noche, de manera que pudiera obedecerla. Él lo hizo, aún cuando lo que Dios le ordenó no tenía sentido militar, y esta fue la clave para su victoria en su lucha por obtener la tierra prometida.

La Biblia es un recurso que a menudo tratamos de manera ligera. Damos prueba de ello al llevar nuestras Biblias a la iglesia, o leer el devocionario diario o un capítulo diario, pero fallamos en memorizarla, en meditar en ella o en aplicarla para nuestras vidas; fracasamos en confesar los pecados que nos revela o adorar a Dios por los dones que revela habernos dado. A menudo nos volvemos o anoréxicos o bulímicos cuando se trata de la Biblia. Al alimentarnos de la Palabra, aspiramos lo suficiente como para mantenernos vivos espiritualmente (pero nunca ingerimos lo suficiente para ser cristianos saludables y prósperos); o a menudo nos alimentamos, pero nunca meditamos el tiempo suficiente, como para obtener de ella una nutrición espiritual.

Si usted no ha hecho un hábito de estudiar y meditar en la Palabra de Dios, es importante que desde ya comience a hacerlo. También le sugiero comenzar un diario. Tenga como un hábito no dejar la Palabra de Dios hasta que haya escrito algo que lo beneficie. Algunos escriben oraciones que le hacen a Dios, pidiéndole que los ayude a cambiar en las áreas en las que Él les ha hablado. La Biblia es la herramienta que utiliza el Espíritu en nuestras vidas (Efesios 6:17), una parte indispensable y primordial de la armadura que Dios nos da, para pelear nuestras batallas espirituales (Efesios 6:12-18).

Where is your heart

As Christians, we strongly want to know and do God's will. In Ephesians chapter 5 verse 17, we are exhorted not to be foolish, but we understand what God's will is. Therefore, it is not an argument to belittle. Instead, we must all pay special attention to understand the fundamental principles that should be the basis of our processes in decision making.

There are specific moments and moments in life when this becomes a challenge. Think of a crucial decision such as: choosing your career, your life partner, your friends, among other things. You want God to speak to you as clearly as possible. You don't want to make mistakes that you know you'll regret for the rest of your life.

The first and most important thing that all of us should do is understand our heart is in "a good place." Being in "a good place" means examining ourselves to see if doing God's will is something important for us, if this is something that genuinely interests us. If this is your case, then your heart is in the right place.

When you want to honor God in decision making, if God is the most important person in your life and your opinion matters and respects you, then without any shadow of a doubt your heart is in the right place. You have nothing to fear. This is the first step towards understanding God's will for you.

God has given us free will. We have to choose the right thing, however, at the same time, God makes us responsible for our decisions. For this reason, God tells us two essential things regarding our hearts:

Keep your heart above everything, because everything we do flows from it.

Where your treasure is, your heart will also be.

When you have to make an important life decision, who do you go to? Whose opinion do you value most? If the answer is God, he has taken the first step towards understanding his will.

Donde esta tu corazon?

Como cristianos, deseamos fuertemente conocer y hacer la voluntad de Dios. En Efesios el capítulo 5 verso 17, somos exhortados para no ser necios, sino que entendamos cuál es la voluntad de Dios. Por lo tanto, no es un argumento para menospreciar. En su lugar, todos debemos prestar especial atención para comprender los principios fundamentales que deben ser la base de nuestros procesos en la toma de decisiones. 

Hay ciertos momentos y períodos en la vida cuando esto se convierte en un desafío. Piensa en una decisión crucial como: elegir tu carrera, tu compañero de vida, tus amigos, entre otras cosas. Deseas que Dios te hable lo más claramente posible. No querrás cometer errores que sabes que lamentarás por el resto de tu vida. 

La primera y más importante cosa que deberíamos hacer todos nosotros es entender si nuestro corazón está en «un buen lugar». Estar en «un buen lugar», significa examinarnos para ver si hacer la voluntad de Dios es algo importante para nosotros, si esto es algo que genuinamente nos interesa. Si este es tu caso, entonces tu corazón está en el lugar correcto.

Cuando tú quieres honrar a Dios en la toma de decisiones, si Dios es la persona más importante en tu vida y su opinión te importa y lo respetas, entonces sin ninguna sombra de duda tu corazón está en el lugar correcto. No tienes nada que temer. Este es el primer paso hacia entender la voluntad de Dios para ti.

Dios nos ha dado libre albedrío. Nosotros tenemos que elegir lo correcto, sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, Dios nos hace responsables de nuestras decisiones. Por esta razón, Dios nos dice dos cosas esenciales con respecto a nuestros corazones:
